Go on a ‘Hood Hunt this Wednesday night

How well do you think you know your way around Wallingford? Now’s your chance to show off your mad map skills and join folks on a ‘Hood Hunt, right here in our very own neighborhood, this Wednesday evening (9/14), beginning at 6pm. This free, map-based scavenger hunt begins at St. Benedict Church (Wallingford Avenue N. and N. 49th St.)

Here’s how it works: Download a ‘Hood Hunt map on their website (the map will have a grid with familiar landmarks, but the streets will not be marked). Grab your friends and meet outside of St. Benedict at 6pm (it’s okay if you can’t make it on time, you can start whenever you want). The map covers about a half square mile and will have 20 checkpoints between N. 45th and N. 50th. Find as many as you can/want, and meet up with fellow ‘hood hunters afterwards at Murphy’s Irish Pub (1928 N 45th Street).

According to the website:

This will be a replay of the ‘Hood Hunt inspiration, the “Wedding Scramble” originally hosted by Patrick & Gina at their wedding in 2010. We kept the 16 checkpoints on the original map, and we expanded the map to the east and added 10 more! We will introduce a fun twist in game play, since this area is pretty small for a standard ‘Hood Hunt.

A classic drama about the conflict between St. Thomas More (1477 –1535. Feast day June 22. Patron of Lawyers and Adopted children) and King Henry VIII, who wants to divorce his wife to marry Anne Boleyn. Canonized in 1535, St Thomas More suffered a martyrs death for his refusal to bend his religious beliefs to suit the king’s wishes. As a layperson, lawyer and father, he wrote his daughter: “that though your lordships now have here on earth judges of my condemnation, we may yet hereafter in heaven merrily all meet together to everlasting salvation.”

Fr. Augustine Thompson, OP, is Professor of History at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley. He was formally professor of religious studies and department chair at the University of Oregon, and professor of history and religious studies at the University of Virginia. Fr. Augustine was recently awarded Master of Sacred Theology, the highest academic honor of the Dominican Order of Preachers. He is the author of the award-winning Cities of God: The Religion of the Italian Communes, 1125-1325 (2005), and Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth-Century Italy (1992). His latest work, Francis of Assisi: A New Biography, will be published by Cornell University Press, and appear in the spring of 2012.

This summer, our Mercy Night will again be celebrated within the context of the Rite of Reconciliation. It will take place on Friday, July 22, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

The evening will feature beautiful contemplative worship music by our Mercy Night musicians. Our Dominican priests will be hearing confessions throughout the evening. Should you want to be prayed with, several trained prayer ministers will be available to offer hands-on prayer for
physical and inner healing as well as for your needs and intentions.

Taize and a Movie

This Saturday, April 9, is the St. Benedict Parish Lenten Retreat presented by Father Steve Sallis. The Retreat begins with 9 AM Mass and ends at 1 PM. “The Creed: Why We Believe,” will be the topic. There will be time for reflection and discussion on The Creed in light of our Old Testament Jewish roots, the Jewish Shema, (“Here O Lord..”) prayer, the Rule of St. Benedict and the statements of the Creed. This will be a good opportunity to prepare us to renew our baptismal promises at Easter.

Mission to Mexico with Esperanza Needs Your Help!
Participants attending this summer’s trip to Mexico are working at Safeco Field concession stands during the 1st half of the Mariner’s season, (April, May, and June) to raise money for their trip. During their mission they build a home with and for a family in need, and the money they raise buys the supplies needed for this task. Would you be willing to help them raise this money? Here are some ways you can help.
If you are a baseball fan, you could attend a game and buy your snacks and beverages from stand #319 (3rd level) on the following dates:

Join us for Taproot Theatre's production of the Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis on Saturday, February 20th at 2:00pm. We have 19 reserved tickets which cost $23 per person. Tickets are payable by check at the Parish Office by Friday, February 12th. If transportation is needed, please let us know. After the 80 minute play we will gather as a group at Romio's for a discussion on the play with on of the cast members. The Great Divorce is a work of fantasy which portrays Christian perceptions of the life after death allegorically, specifically one individuals journey from hell/purgatory to heaven and salvation.

"Relating to People as Jesus Would" is the theme of the six week faith sharing/scripture groups beginning the week of February 14th. Individuals read sections of the book and meet in a small group with a facilitator for sharing and discussion. Childcare Help STILL Needed!

We know that young adults have busy schedules but not necessarily on Sunday mornings! We could use help in the child care area (ages 2-4 years old) as well as with the Sunday school session (ages 4 & 5 years old) both during the 10am Mass and with many of our elementary, junior and high school offerings. Anyone working with children or teens must attend a Safe Environment Training Session and complete a criminal background check. We are offering Safe Environment Training on Monday, February 8th at 7pm as well as on Sunday, February 21st at 2pm. You must register for the session. Tijuana Anyone??

Esperanza International, Inc. is the secular organization which we and other parishes throughout the NW partner with to teach their parishes about social justice. As part of that exercise, parishes send a group to Tijuana to build a home, staying at the Esperanza sponsored "posada" (dormitory) for a week or two. Each house takes about 3-4 weeks to build, so most groups only work on a part of the house.

This year, we will build during the week of August 7-14, bringing with us students age 16+, some of which are accompanied by their parents, which adds a wonderful family dynamic a kin to that of the Mexican culture. We have room for 16 people (teens and adults) on the trip this year and are especially looking for some strong young men to join the group. Please contact Renee Lindstrom with your questions or to make a donation. $200 deposit to hold a spot for parishioner, by April 1st. $300 for non-parishioners after April 1st, if space is available.

Our first meeting with basic information is this Sunday, February 7th from 1-2pm in the Parish Center. Snacks will be provided.

Catholics Exploring their Beliefs Series

Mark your calendar: Beginning January 14th, you are invited to gather for Catholics Exploring their Beliefs series. The series will take place on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm and will last for four weeks. All Catholic adults of the parish are invited to participate in one or all of the four evenings. The list of the talks are as follows:

January 14th: Enculturation, music and Liturgy - Celebrate and discuss during our Parish Zambia Awareness week
January 21st: What does it mean to be catholic?
January 28th: Signs, symbols and Sacraments
February 4th: Teaching Authority & Moral Decision Making

Childcare Help Needed!

Hi Everyone- One of our fellow young adult parishioners, Jenn Law, recently signed on as the Childcare Coordinator at St Ben's. Her main responsibility includes supervising children, ages 2-4, during the 10:00am mass. This past Sunday, she was surprised with the larger than expected turnout and would really appreciate some additional help (as a rule, there has to be one adult per 5 children).

If you're interested in volunteering your time to help Jenn out, I have listed her contact information below. You do not have to commit to every Sunday, if your schedule does not permit. Even being available on one or two Sundays would be a big help. Jenn's desire is to compile a list of people that she could contact when the need arises.

If you are willing to help out, you will need to attend a Safe Environment Program before you will be allowed to work with children (there's a class taking place this Saturday from 2-4pm). Please visit the below link to sign up for a class that works with your schedule.

Trivia night at Norms!

Hey there. During our last "Luke Small Group", we discussed the idea of getting together at a local bar for "trivia night". After looking at my schedule more closely, a social event in December is just not realistic. Instead, let's get together on Thursday, January 7th at Norm's in Fremont. Plan on arriving around 7:00 so we can catch up prior to the games beginning at 8:00pm (this will also allow us to secure a table....who knows how crowded this place gets!). Please remember to leave me a comment, letting me know if you can make it. I look forward to seeing you all there!
